Yes, women should be taught martial arts and viciousness. All good peaceful people should learn self defense and the killer instinct for life or death situations. I’m glad you got away from your attacker and disabled him. Pepper spray yes, brass knuckles, maybe not. If one has harm initiated onto them (violence), that person should be physically and psychologically ready to inflict serious pain onto the attacker. This is not violence for it was not initiated, this is self defense.

I totally agree. Self defense is a must. The smaller a person the more important.

Men have higher muscle mass than women and are simply stronger. A small man, a big man, they can overpower a woman.

These are obviously blanket statements but they generally hold true across humanity. Outliers exist but they don't discount the rule.

Self-defense is very important but situational awareness is is under-appreciated. Many, many people get themselves in shitty situations because they are not mindful of their environment or do not think about the environment they willingly put themselves into.

Humility and pragmatism go a long way as well. Just because you can, or have the right, does not make you superhuman.

Situational awareness really is king. If you can get out before anything starts, that is most preferable.

I made the career move from touring musician to Krav Maga junky in 2006. One of the most fulfilling frequent scenes to witness was a woman embracing her aggression for the first time. It gives me chills today. They always walked out a different human than they were before.

I have a young daughter and when she’s old enough she will go into BJJ at a minimum and the striking arts if she feels compelled to practice them.

I also think the argument that women shouldn’t train self defense because men are stronger falls so flat. One, I read in your bio that you’re a powerlifter. I’m willing to bet you possess strength that average and below average men don’t. Two, I’m a smaller framed man. Does that mean I shouldn’t learn to defend myself because there are potentially bigger and stronger men out there? No, it means I need to train harder and smarter, and have situational awareness to not put myself in unnecessary danger.

That is just it, if you are smaller it is in your best interest to train harder and as you point out smarter. I see many BJJ videos and it looks like the best option for smaller people especially kids. But learning to strike fearlessly is good too. I may sign both me and my son for it in the fall.
